On Wednesday (12th), we will be running Maths Café in the Undergraduate Workroom (A0.05), from 13:00 to 15:00. As usual, we will be bringing (a small amount of) food for you to enjoy.
If you have any questions about academics, module options, or any general queries about the university, our academic support officers (and many other attendees) will be happy to help.
Also on Wednesday (12th), we will be running the first round of the Manchester Mathematics League in MS.05 from 18:00. You will have 1.5 hours to solve 20 questions. Top contestents qualify for round 2 in mid March 2026. Please sign up by filling in this form.
On Thursday (13th), we are running Coffee and Cake, our weekly welfare event, from 11:00 to 12:00, in MB0.08. Drop in to get a hot drink and some food, and relax with others in an informal and friendly environment.
Also on Thursday (13th), we have our regularly scheduled WMS Talk, titled My journey as a mathematician into public health, with guest speaker Professor Kat Rock, in MS.04, from 18:00 to 19:00, with free pizza afterwards.
Abstract:
In this talk I will focus on my research on mathematical modelling to support the elimination of African sleeping sickness, a deadly, insect-borne disease. I’ll outline how my research in this area has evolved over the past 15 years, starting from my roots in more theoretical analysis of dynamical systems, through to calibration of models to real-world data via Bayesian statistics, using health economics to provide policy recommendations, and development of online tools to support ministries of health and other stakeholders. I will provide some personal perspectives on my academic journey, including challenges and highlights of my career so far.
On Saturday (15th), we have the first round of the Warwick-Imperial (WIMP) Maths Conference. It starts at 9:00 and ends at 18:30, in MS.01 and MS.02. The itinerary is below.
